Technically speaking, there may be some minor roof repairs that a handy layperson can handle. But even in these cases, we don’t recommend DIY roof repairs. It may seem like an easy way to save money, but you could easily violate your roof’s warranty and end up spending more in the long run.
How do you apply a patch kit to a shingle roof?
You can apply a patch kit over a damaged section of your roof by following these steps:
- Clean the roof surface: Remove debris, dirt, or loose granules around the damaged area to ensure the patch adheres properly.
- Apply roofing cement: Spread roofing cement under the surrounding shingles to help hold the new patch in place.
- Insert the patch: Place the patch in the exposed area, aligning it with the existing shingles.
- Seal with roofing cement: Apply roofing cement or another sealant over the edges of the patch or shingle to prevent water infiltration.
- Press and secure: Press down on the patch or new shingle firmly, ensuring a good bond with the cement.
- Allow time to set: Give the patch time to set and adhere, following the manufacturer’s instructions for curing time.

Will my homeowners insurance cover any roof repair costs?
Depending on your policy, your homeowners insurance company may cover some or all of your roof repair costs. This typically depends on how your roof was damaged. If a hurricane or tropical storm tore shingles from your roof, your roof repairs may be covered. But most homeowners insurance policies don’t cover wear and tear.
Will my roof need replacing if I get it repaired?
No, in most cases getting asphalt shingle repairs doesn’t mean that your roof is nearing the end of its life. Most shingle repair jobs will last for the full life of your roof. However, if your roof needs many repairs, it could be a sign that it’s nearing the end of its life.
