”The Villages Paid for Your Roof Inspection”
A common one this year is scammers claiming to have been paid by The Villages to inspect your roof, either themselves or with a drone. In either case, this is a lie. No fund has ever been set aside for this purpose, and a roof estimate should never cost anything, anyway.
Scammers use this tactic to give themselves an air of legitimacy, but they don’t have other credentials to fall back on. Ask for their license number and look them up. A real roofer should have no problem with a bit of scrutiny, but a scammer will always have a reason you can’t find them in the contractor database.
”We’ll Work with Your Insurance”
A lot of homeowners in The Villages report scammers coming to their door saying they were droning the area and saw substantial damage. They’ll then offer to work with your insurance directly so that the roof is free and you don’t have to deal with any hassle.
If this sounds too good to be true, that’s because it is. Never work with a roofer who offers to be the intermediary between you and your insurance. While roofers should handle all permitting, scam roofers will abuse your insurance and over-charge for a low-quality roofing system.

Never trust anything but a clear, itemized roof cost estimate. These scam roofers can offer low prices because they use cheap materials and have no overhead — because they’re not a real business. But when you’ve got a shoddy, half-finished roof, you’re the one who really ends up paying.
